Mr. McGuire: ”I just want to say one word to you. Just one word.”
Benjamin: “Yes, sir.”
Mr. McGuire: “Are you listening?”
Benjamin: “Yes, I am.”
Mr. McGuire: “Plastics.” (The Graduate, 1967)
Let’s say a calamity hits your city. Water, gas, and electricity are off. Did I mention water?
Most of us have some bottles of water or other types of liquid on hand. So, we will probably have something to drink for a couple of days. Yet, if the water is off, using the toilet will soon be a problem in our homes.
Using the back yard as a big toilet bowl offers an alternative solution, but in Southern California, with our hot sun and warm days, it would soon be foul smelling. Multiply the odor by the number of our neighbors and it would be beyond raunchy. Yuck!
Here’s a possible solution for us:
After the toilet bowl has been flushed, with no water in it, line it with a black plastic bag. Use cat litter or dry soap detergent to lessen the odor. When the bag is filled, tie it, and store the bag with the garbage. Replace with another bag.
Next time we go to the grocery store, let’s grab an extra package of black plastic bags. We’ll put the package in our closet…just in case.
